Our Marula Oil The key ingredient in our Midnight Oil Collection is Marula Oil. Marula Oil is produced from nuts harvested from trees growing across a wild swath of East Africa from Kenya into Tanzania by a group of people who have a strong conviction to developing sustainable living practices in a broad range of areas such as farming, energy production, and water use. The trees are plentiful. The fruit typically falls to the ground where it ferments and rots or is consumed by elephants and baboons. The fallen fruit is sometimes gathered by women to make juice, jams, and a Marula liqueur. After the removing the fruit, the nuts are sun dried. Manual extraction of the oil-rich kernels (two or three may be inside each shell) requires tremendous force. Careful inspection during removal by hand ensures the finest quality oil. The kernels are processed in small batches by pressing and filtering the oil using high-quality stainless steel presses and filtering equipment to ensure quality and sterility. Of all the uses of the Marula, it is the oil that has brought spiritual status to the tree because of its healing properties.
